People say that homesickness usually hits around the three month mark.
I moved to San Diego on July 3rd, so today marks my third month. It’s official — I am missing my old home.
Although San Diego is an amazing place to live and I’m so grateful that things worked out for me to move here, I wasn’t expecting to experience a wave of homesickness, especially at my age. Of course I miss my family and friends, but I also miss the beauty of Pasadena, CA, the town I spent the majority of my life in. Regardless of how much you travel and leave home, I guess you’re never too old to miss it.

According to Wikipedia, the first mention of homesickness in Western literature was Odysseus who “wept and rolled on the hard ground thinking of home.” Thankfully, I haven’t resorted to weeping and rolling around on the hard ground yet. Still, the anxiety is kicking in.
Here’s a report-out on how I’m doing with the coping methods recommended for homesickness:
I’m managing well with this one. I still have zero regrets about moving to San Diego, especially since I traded in my horrible one-hour commute to work for a 10 minute drive to the local office. San Diego has a wonderful small town feel with the perks of a larger city.
Email, check. Blog, check. Traditional letters . . . I’ll put that on my to-do list once I finish with the kitchen.
I’m slowly but surely trying to get back on the exercise wagon. At my best, I was doing a combination of swimming, running and ballet classes. So far, I’m managing 1 out of 3. I’m going to have to do better. Instead of inviting me to the movies, people out here say “We’re doing a 30 mile bike ride tomorrow. Wanna come?”
This sounds kind of redundant with keeping in touch with home.
San Diego is a paradise. Enough said.
